As the title says. The kid is about 12 years old, and both him and his brother play in our public game. They both have nooks. We play at the local comic book shop.
5 Four of the classes introduced in this book—the barbarian, the druid, the shaman, and the warden— use the primal power source. Some primal powers are more overtly magical than others, but they all draw on the spirits of nature that pervade the world and, to some extent, the echo plane known as the Feywild.

Am I wrong to think if their parents can afford to buy them nooks, they can afford to buy a Players Handbook? Particularly because, again-- we play at a local comic book/game shop. Which sells the PHB and other gaming books.
Editing to clarify: From what I can tell, the kids do not own a physical copy of these books. They are relatively new players. This isn't a case of having a digital copy of something you already bought.
I think my question/concern/dilemma might be distilled down to a question of whether the gamer community has a responsibility to encourage children to support the local game shop financially, or if we're all 'MYOB' about it. On the one hand: Doesn't it take a village? On the other: Kids should be allowed to find free ways to play games so when they have money, they will want to spend it on the game.
